An very raw demo, Running Man tells the story of a man who basically has his shit together. The song features very simple lyrics, obviously unfinished, and was never released on any Weezer album. The music is quite good, and could be great if it was produced further. The potential of this song has it on the list, but the lack of production values and unfinished lyrics keep it low at number 92. I’m sure most of you have never heard this song, but you can listen to it on YouTube.

Maladroit

Love Explosion, off of Weezer’s Maladroit, is a song that took on many different forms prior to its release. Demos of this song were released, like many of the Maladroit tracks, and drew comparisons to “The Loco-Motion” almost immediately. However, unlike “The Loco-Motion”, this song would not place on the Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 500 songs of all time. Nowhere close, in fact. This song has a pretty good sound, it’s a throwaway track on Maladroit, and the lyrics seem to have some kind of deeper petty meaning. Like Maladroit’s Space Rock, it seems that Rivers is almost singing in defiance of the fans who disliked the Green album. It’s got a catchy chorus, though.

One of my favorite Weezer demos ever to see the light of day, Mo’ Beats samples the Beastie Boys “No Sleep ‘Till Brooklyn.” Now, don’t get me wrong… it’s one of my favorites, but it’s a joke of a song. I can imagine Rivers getting bored in the studio after the work put into Green and Maladroit, just going nutty, and thinking of ridiculous words to a song he just happened to hear on some modern rock station or something. The song was released on Weezer’s website, along with many other demos, right after Maladroit. The song is heavier than most material from the band, but it fit in with the timeline of Maladroit, which also featured some heavier rock songs.

Really, the first 45 seconds are all you need on this song, and afterwards it just goes downhill. But, the first 45 seconds are awesome. The opening includes the line…

I got mo’ beats than y’all
Keep Fishin’ still seems small
Is that the best that all of you can do?

Wonder if Rivers actually likes Keep Fishin’? I know audiences didn’t. Anyway, Mo’ Beats is another song that Weezer diehards seemed to hate when it was released, but casual audiences probably never heard it. If they did, they wouldn’t like it. So, it gets spot #94 on the top 100 list as we roll into #93 tomorrow which will feature a song off of Maladroit~!

Simple song, vocals and guitar. No hook, but easy to listen to. The song reminds me of Pinkerton’s Butterfly, with Rivers trying to tie human emotion to the ending of an animal’s life. It’s not a pop song, not a catchy rock song, but a rising melody that tells a story. What the story is is unknown. It’s almost as if it Rivers started playing a simple guitar piece and just sang words as he went along, having an idea in his head but not giving much thought to what the next line really would be.

We Are All On Drugs

Our fifth song on the Weezer 100 is the second song from Make Believe to hit the list. A song that took three years to record and perfect, We Are All On Drugs is not necessarily about hardcore partying or drug use, as Rivers stated in a radio interview in 2005…

“Don’t take it literally…I’m singing more about the fact [of] how addicted we all are to stimulating ourselves, and over-stimulating ourselves with music, or whatever it is in our lives. [It's] not necessarily about drugs.”

We are all on drugs, yeah, gimme some of that stuff… yeah, the lyrics aren’t much. The song is catchy enough for a throwaway song on an album, except that this was actually the second single off the CD, following the most successful Weezer single of all time in Beverly Hills. As a single, it’s not strong.

An interesting note on this song, is that on the original CD released the song features a lyric that wasn’t meant to be on the song. “I want to confiscate your drugs, I don’t think I can get enough.” Those who bought the CD soon after release have this version, but it was corrected later on to feature the line “I want to reach a higher plane, where things will never be the same.”

Clocking in at just under three minutes, Simple Pages is one of the longer songs on Weezer’s “Green” album. There have been many theories on what this song is about. Some thing it’s about Rivers telling himself to get back into the songwriting mind he had before taking a five+ year break from Weezer. Some say it means nothing, and is just another song on Green that sounds like five or six others on the album. Others, that the simple pages are simple lyrics he wishes to create from now on, rather than the lyrics of the commercially unsuccessful “Pinkerton” album. From the lyrics, it certainly seems like it can be about Rivers himself, and getting him back into the songwriting mindset. Either way, it’s a catchy song, but not among the best on Green, but it is among the top 100 Weezer songs of all time. Moreso for the sound, than the words.
